Too Much Baby?

This is our first baby since beginning our blog. I'm not sure how many blog posts we can put on before blog readership takes a sharp decline. I may be dangerously close.


I'm typing this out Sunday night but putting this on a delayed-post because I'll be in Texas this week.


Let me ramble a bit about the new baby.


Baby six is just like Babies one through five. The only difference is that memories of the good things about new babies last five times longer than memories of the inconveniences. I'm also finding that as I get older (and accustomed to being awake during the day and sleeping at night) the tipping point of "listen to how sweet that baby's cry is" has moved to about 2:00 PM. This means that the crying solstice is right around 2:00 AM. Baby Mimi enjoys crying, eating, burping, pooping, and then dozing off in a continuous nine-minute cycle. She's like a snooze button with homework.


She has begun to open her eyes, and Mary and I marvel at how much she changes day-to-day and minute-to-minute.


We're not quite to the point where we can identify any stark differences in the club we belong to, but it's worth mentioning how different our hospital experience was. I often put nurses in the same category as librarians, overzealous lifeguards, people who drive 3 mph under the speed limit in the passing lane and clowns. This time however the nurses looked at our chart which either said "six kids - this ain't their first rodeo" or "looking for an excuse to glare at you every time you enter the room." Either way, they treatment we received was wonderful. The nursing staff at McKay was helpful without being overbearing. They encourage leaving the baby with the mother as much as possible and have gratefully abandoned the practice of waking the baby every forty-five minutes to check vitals. It's funny how the nine-minute baby snooze alarm and the forty-five minute nurse annoyance check never actually met up.

Steven is only eight years away from his missionary homecoming, so maybe a decade from now I'll have a grandchild that will make me significantly smarter.
